If you are aiming for weight loss, make sure to add ingredients that can be a powerful ally in this journey. One such ingredient that you should add is moringa, which is often referred to as the ‘drumstick tree’ or ‘miracle tree’. You can add this herb to your dishes or consume its powder to gain the result. We spoke to our expert, Dr Rohini Patil, MBBS and Nutritionist, who listed the benefits of moringa for weight loss.

Nutrient-Rich Profile

Moringa is known for its exceptional nutrient density. While not a direct weight loss mechanism, the nutrient richness supports general well-being, which is a crucial foundation for any weight loss journey. It is packed with vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, and essential amino acids. This green powerhouse provides a combination of nutrients that are vital for your overall health.

Appetite Regulation

One way moringa may indirectly contribute to weight loss is through its potential impact on appetite regulation. According to the International Journal of Molecular Sciences, moringa contains 34g of fibre. Due to this fibre content, there is suppression of appetite and leads to lower calorie intake.

Dr Patil said, “Moringa extracts may possess properties that influence hormones related to satiety and hunger. By promoting a feeling of fullness, individuals may be less inclined to overeat, potentially aiding in weight management.”

Metabolic Boost

Another factor that aids in weight loss is moringa’s metabolic properties. Certain compounds in moringa, such as chlorogenic acid, have been studied for their ability to enhance metabolic rate. “A higher metabolic rate means the body burns calories more efficiently, which can be a supportive element in a weight loss journey when combined with a balanced diet and regular exercise”, informed Dr Patil.

According to a test-tube study by Frontiers in Pharmacology, moringa can reduce fat formation and enhance fat breakdown.

Blood Sugar Regulation

Maintaining stable blood sugar levels is crucial for weight management as fluctuations can lead to overeating due to increased cravings. “Moringa may contribute to blood sugar regulation, potentially assisting in preventing sudden spikes and crashes that can contribute to unhealthy eating habits”, added Dr Patil.

Anti-Inflammatory Effects

Chronic inflammation is increasingly recognised as a factor in weight gain and difficulty in losing weight. Moringa's anti-inflammatory properties, attributed to compounds like quercetin and beta-carotene, may play a role in creating a favourable environment for weight loss by addressing underlying inflammation. It also helps to regulate blood sugar levels and burn fat.

Bottomline

Dr Patil concluded, “When it comes to nutrition, there's rarely a one-size-fits-all solution. Including moringa as a nutrient-rich component in a well-rounded diet may offer support, but it's crucial to approach weight loss with realistic expectations and a comprehensive lifestyle approach. As with any dietary change, consulting with a healthcare professional or nutrition expert is advised to ensure individualised advice aligned with personal health goals.”
