Itchy Gums: 7 Home Remedies To Prevent Them

Onlymyhealth Dabur Vedic Tea

Itchy gums can be a bothersome and uncomfortable experience, often accompanied by irritation and a strong urge to scratch. While it's essential to consult with a dentist for persistent issues, several home remedies can provide relief from itchy gums.

“There are a number of reasons why the gums may begin to itch. They are the primary barrier and seal for your teeth. Healthy gums are essential for the protective layer that surrounds the teeth, and itching is usually an indication of bacteria buildup between the teeth and gums. Most difficulties can be avoided by practising good dental hygiene and making healthier lifestyle choices,” said Dr Suman Yadav (M.D.S) Dentist Maxillofacial Oral & Dental Surgeon, Center For Dental Care, Vaishali. Here are seven effective and natural ways to soothe and prevent gum itchiness.

Saltwater Rinse

According to Dr Yadav, saltwater rinse is a simple yet effective remedy for itchy gums. Mix a teaspoon of salt in a glass of warm water and use it as a mouthwash. The salt helps reduce inflammation and acts as a natural antiseptic, promoting healing and alleviating itchiness.

Aloe Vera Gel

Known for its soothing properties, aloe vera gel can be applied topically to the gums for relief from itchiness. Use a cotton swab to gently apply a small amount of pure aloe vera gel to the affected areas. Aloe vera's anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial properties can help calm irritated gums.

Clove Oil

Clove oil has long been recognised for its analgesic and anti-inflammatory properties. Dilute a few drops of clove oil in a carrier oil like coconut oil and apply it to the itchy gums using a cotton ball. Clove oil can provide temporary relief and promote a soothing effect.

Ice Cubes

As per Dr Yadav, ice cubes can help numb the affected area and reduce inflammation, providing quick relief from gum itchiness. Place a cold compress or ice pack wrapped in a thin cloth against the outside of your cheek for 15-20 minutes. Be sure to avoid direct contact with the skin to prevent frostbite.

Turmeric Paste

Turmeric contains curcumin, a compound known for its anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties. Create a paste by mixing turmeric powder with a small amount of water and apply it to the itchy gums. Leave it on for a few minutes before rinsing your mouth thoroughly. This remedy can help alleviate inflammation and discomfort.

Tea Bag Compress

Black or green tea bags can be used as a compress to relieve itchy gums. Steep a tea bag in hot water, allow it to cool slightly, and then place it against the affected area for 15-20 minutes. The natural compounds in tea, such as tannins, possess anti-inflammatory properties that may help soothe the gums.

Maintain Oral Hygiene

Preventing itchy gums starts with good oral hygiene. Brush your teeth twice a day using a soft-bristled toothbrush, and don't forget to floss regularly to remove debris between the teeth. Using an antiseptic mouthwash can also help keep the gums healthy and reduce the risk of irritation.

While these home remedies can offer relief for mild cases of itchy gums, persistent or severe symptoms warrant professional dental attention. Regular visits to the dentist, a balanced diet, and proper oral hygiene practices are essential for maintaining gum health. If the itchiness persists or is accompanied by other concerning symptoms, it's advisable to consult with a dentist for a thorough evaluation and appropriate treatment.
