In this article, we're going to learn about some herbal remedies known for their immunity-boosting properties.

Ashwagandha (Withania somnifera)

Ashwagandha, also referred to as Withania somnifera, is an ancient medicinal herb known for its several health benefits. Since it is an adaptogenic herb, it is said to aid the body in managing stress, anxiety, insomnia, and improving sexual health

The herb is also beneficial for the immune system because of its immunomodulatory properties, which helps regulate the body's immune response, making it more efficient in combating infections and illnesses. A study published in the Journal of Clinical Medicine found that leaf and root extract of ashwagandha "possesses potent immune-stimulatory properties," which makes it "a valuable addition in the immunity-boosting herbal supplements." 

Triphala (Amalaki, Haritaki, Bibhitaki)

The literal translation of triphala is "three fruits", which means that it is made of a mixture of three fruits, which include amla, also called Indian gooseberry, bibhitaki (Terminalia bellirica), and haritaki (Terminalia chebula). The combination of these fruits is said to be extremely beneficial for health. From aiding the digestion to regulating blood sugar levels to preventing certain types of cancers, experts believe it holds several benefits. It is also packed with vitamin C, essential minerals, and amino acids, which make it great for your immune system. 

Tulsi 

When it comes to enhancing immunity, tulsi tea is an age-old remedy popular in most Indian households. Within Ayurveda, tulsi is called by many names, including “The Incomparable One,” “Mother Medicine of Nature'' and “The Queen of Herbs. Research suggests tulsi has anti-bacterial, antiviral and antifungal properties, which makes it a great herbal medicine to keep infections at bay.  

Turmeric

No Indian kitchen is complete without it. It is a widely-used spice that contains a powerful antioxidant and anti-inflammatory compound called curcumin. Curcumin is known for its immunity-boosting properties that prevent the occurrence of infections. A study, published in the International Journal of Molecular Sciences, suggests curcumin can lower inflammation in the body and also enhance the innate immune system against tumour cells, cardiovascular diseases, and pathogens.

Licorice

Licorice, also known as Mulethi in Indian households, is known to alleviate cold and flu symptoms, including sore throat, cough, and blocked, runny nose. According to the National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health, licorice roots can be used as dietary supplement for conditions, such as digestive problems, menopausal symptoms, cough, and bacterial and viral infections.

Neem

Neem is a popular herbal remedy for treating tooth plaque and lice, as per WebMD. It is a strong antioxidant, has anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial properties that helps protect against various infections and illnesses. Neem is also said to be an effective mosquito repellent, which makes it a great remedy to prevent mosquito-borne illnesses, like dengue and malaria.
