White teeth not only look hygienic but also adds charm to your personality. If you want to have clean white teeth are certain things you should avoid.
Who doesn't want a bright, radiant smile with clean white teeth? Not only do they look clean and hygienic, they add charm to your personality, boosting your self-esteem. While brushing and flossing play essential roles in dental care, certain habits can sabotage your efforts to achieve and maintain clean white teeth. We spoke to Dr Nihal Yadav, BDS, Amayra Dental Clinic, Kaushik Enclave, Burari, Delhi and Former Resident, Deen Dayal Hospital, Hari Nagar, Delhi, who shed light on the things you shouldn't do if you want a dazzling smile.
According to Statista, the global teeth whitening market was worth around 6.14 billion US dollars in 2020 and is expected to increase to 8.21 billion US dollars by 2026. Professional teeth whitening for an individual may range from ₹ 3,000 to ₹ 20,000. However, you can save this expanse if you take a little care about your teeth and oral health consistently. Here's what you need to do to have clean white teeth.

"If you eat certain foods and beverages, such as coffee, tea, red wine, dark sodas, and berries can stain your teeth," said Dr Yadav. He explained that foods such as these contain pigments that can adhere to tooth enamel, causing discolouration over time. "Thus, avoid excessive consumption of these staining substances, and if you do indulge, rinse your mouth with water afterwards or use a straw to minimise contact with your teeth," suggested the doctor.
Another habit that you should avoid if you want your teeth to be clean and white is to avoid tobacco products. "The tar and nicotine in tobacco can leave stubborn, unsightly stains on teeth, and in addition to cosmetic concerns, they can lead to various dental issues, such as gum disease and oral cancer," cautioned Dr Yadav. He suggested that quitting smoking and tobacco use will not only improve the colour of your teeth but also enhance your overall oral health.
Consistent dental hygiene practices, including brushing and flossing twice daily, are essential for maintaining white teeth. "Neglecting these routines allows plaque to accumulate, promoting tooth discolouration and decay. So, make sure to use fluoride toothpaste and a soft-bristled brush to clean your teeth gently yet effectively," said Dr Yadav.
If you consume highly acidic foods, such as citrus fruits and vinegar-based dressings, it is likely to damage your teeth. "These highly acidic foods can erode tooth enamel, making teeth more susceptible to staining and sensitivity," said Dr Yadav. While these foods can be part of a healthy diet, it's best to consume them in moderation and rinse your mouth with water afterwards to neutralise the acidity.

"Whitening toothpaste, strips, and other over-the-counter products can be effective when used as directed. However, excessive use of these products or using products not recommended by dental professionals can damage tooth enamel, leading to sensitivity and uneven whitening results. So, always consult your dentist before using any whitening products," said the doctor.
Maintaining white teeth goes beyond mere aesthetics; it is a reflection of oral health. "Regular brushing and flossing help remove surface stains and prevent the buildup of plaque and tartar, ensuring your teeth stay healthy and bright. Additionally, a balanced diet and minimal consumption of teeth-staining foods and drinks contribute significantly to preserving the whiteness of your teeth," suggested the doctor.
