Peppermint oil has been revered for its refreshing aroma and potent medicinal properties for centuries. Beyond its refreshing scent, peppermint oil holds remarkable potential in managing chronic pain and improving sleep quality.
A recent clinical study published in the journal BMJ Supportive & Palliative Care revealed that using peppermint oil in aromatherapy may ease pain severity after open heart surgery and enhance sleep quality.
Findings of the Study
Sharing the purpose of their study, the researchers shared that heart surgery is an invasive procedure that requires separating the breastbone and employing mechanical breathing support. Both these processes can impart severe pain to the patient and make it difficult to relax and get quality sleep.
Getting relief from chronic pain can enable the heart surgery patient to recover more quickly and save them from postoperative complications. The researchers shared that using natural remedies provides a safer option to help patients sleep better and manage their pain and can lighten the burden of mechanical ventilation, length of hospital stay, and healthcare costs.
