Pinworms or Enterobius vermicularis, are minute, thread-like parasites that enter the human intestines and cause discomfort and irritation. Pinworm infections are most common in youngsters, but they can affect adults of any age. The good news is that there are various natural therapies that can help eradicate pinworms and relieve associated symptoms without the use of harmful drugs.
How Pinworm Infections Occur
“Pinworm infections are highly contagious and spread through the ingestion of microscopic pinworm eggs. These eggs can be found on contaminated surfaces such as bedding, clothing, and hands. Once ingested, the eggs hatch in the intestines, leading to symptoms like itching around the anus, insomnia, and stomach discomfort,” said Dr Yashi Malhotra, Clinical Paediatrician from Fatima Hospital, Lucknow.
Natural Remedies for Pinworms
Garlic
Garlic is renowned for its antimicrobial properties. Consuming raw garlic or adding it to your meals can help eliminate pinworms due to its allicin content. Allicin has strong antibacterial and antiparasitic effects, making it an effective natural remedy for pinworm infections.

Pumpkin Seeds
Pumpkin seeds are rich in cucurbitacin, a compound known for its ability to paralyse and expel intestinal worms. Grind raw pumpkin seeds into a fine powder and mix them with honey for a tasty and effective remedy. Consume this mixture daily for several weeks to eradicate pinworms.
Probiotics
Probiotics, commonly found in fermented foods like yoghourt and kefir, promote the growth of beneficial bacteria in the gut. These friendly bacteria help maintain a healthy balance in the digestive system, making it less favourable for parasites like pinworms to thrive. Regular consumption of probiotic-rich foods can aid in preventing and treating pinworm infections.
Carrots
Carrots are not only a nutritious vegetable but also contain compounds that may help eliminate pinworms. Consuming grated carrots on an empty stomach in the morning can contribute to flushing out intestinal parasites from the body.
Hygiene Practices
Practising good hygiene is crucial in preventing and controlling pinworm infections. Wash hands thoroughly after using the toilet, before meals, and after changing diapers. Keep nails short and discourage nail-biting to minimise the risk of pinworm egg ingestion.
