All of us want healthy skin that radiates with natural glow. It requires making a long-term investment in good skincare products that help achieve and retain healthy skin. A good moisturiser is one of the fundamental skin care products to boost hydration and promote softness & suppleness. However, it need not be overused. Yes, some people get obsessed with moisturisers so much that they keep on applying them. According to Dr. Nivedita Dadu, Renowned Dermatologist, Founder & Chairman of Dadu Medical Centre, overusing moisturisers is bad for skin health. It can give rise to many skin problems.
Moisturizer Overuse
Keeping the skin moisturized all the time is the basic skincare tip anybody will give you to get youthful and glowing skin. During summers, it’s easy to apply too much of moisturizer. Overusing moisturizer can sometimes cause more harm than good. When we apply an extra layer of moisturizer, it can be totally wasteful since the skin can only absorb as much moisturizer as it requires. For people dealing with blemish-prone skin types, too much moisturizer can cause congestion, bumps, and breakouts.
Signs of over-moisturizing face
Always be very careful before applying moisturizer, choose one that suits your skin type. High quality moisturizers are very concentrated and deliver results in very small amounts.
- If it takes a long time for your moisturizer to be absorbed into the skin or if you are going through the product quickly, there is a high chance that you’re overusing your moisturizer.
- Overuse of moisturizer in dry skin can make the skin dry and flaky.
- Overuse of moisturizer can cause build up of excess water, lipids and protein that are skin's building blocks and that it can slow down the production of these important skin nutrients.
- This can make the skin appear dry because the skin stops producing necessary nutrients which cause you to over moisturize your skin.
Tips to correctly use a moisturiser
A good way to use a moisturizer effectively is to make sure that the skin isn’t covered in dead skin cells. Dead skin stops the skin from absorbing moisture. So, it's always necessary to exfoliate the skin with a gentle product at least once a week so that you remove dead cells on the surface of the skin. Then, use a small amount of the moisturizer according to the skin type and make sure the skin absorbs it completely.

Avoid over-stimulating the skin with overuse of moisturizer. Always take a small quantity of moisturizer and apply moisturizer to the center of the palm. Then, warm the product in the palms and fingers that ensure even application on the skin. After that spread moisturizer to the forehead, nose, chin, neck, and ears. No need to rub the skin too hard. Always use a gentle hand to lift the skin, always keep in mind that never drag it down.
Exfoliating before applying moisturizer helps to remove dead skin cells and excess oil, which makes for easier absorption of the moisturizer into skin cells. Then use a toner to your daily skincare regime before applying moisturizer. It will help to spread the moisturizer in even proportion, maximizing the absorption so that nutrients present in it can go deeper into the layers of the skin.
